Sejarah Si Godfather of NuMetal Korn! Ini adalah sedikit uraian tentang sejarahnya KoRn si Godfather of NuMetal. Ini diambil dari archivenya kompasdotcom hasil googling in my bat-time (begadang) tadi malam. Dan gambar diatas juga hasil googling, yang saya temukan disitus jarum-superdotcom yang diambil saat KoRn konser dijakarta 5 februari 2004 kemarin. Berikut kutipan tentang sejarah awal mulanya Korn : ——- Cerita tentang KoRn bermula sekitar 15 tahun lalu. Persisnya saat Fieldy, Munky, dan David, yang sama-sama kelahiran Bakersfield, California, Amerika Serikat, itu sepakat membentuk sebuah band dan berkarier di jalur musik. Tidak seperti sekarang, band yang diberi nama L.A.P.D (singkatan dari Love And Peace Dude) itu awalnya berkutat di jalur funk alternatif semodel Faith No More atau Red Hot Chili Peppers. Sempat mereguk sukses di lokalan Amerika dan beberapa negara Eropa, karier L.A.P.D terhenti setelah merilis hanya satu album, Who’s Laughing Now? (1991). Penyebabnya tak lain lantaran perilaku para personelnya yang “ajaib”. Hobi betul mereka merusak backstage mereka sendiri. Lebih ajaib lagi, mereka menganggap bahwa semua itu adalah salah satu cara yang efektif untuk mendapatkan publikasi dan sorotan media! Tentu saja hal itu merepotkan semua pihak yang terlibat. Manajemen serta, tentunya, label yang menaungi mereka. Hingga sampai pada satu titik, pihak label tak tahan lagi lalu langsung memutuskan kontrak. Pemutusan kontrak itu berefek pula pada bubarnya formasi L.A.P.D, yang sebenarnya sangat menjanjikan. Vokalis mereka saat itu, Richard Morral, terlanda stres berat, dan serta-merta mengundurkan diri. Untungnya, kehilangan kontrak label plus vokalis tidak menyurutkan semangat. Mereka tetap kukuh melanjutkan cita-cita. Bahkan, dengan penuh percaya diri Fieldy cs merekrut Brian Welch, seorang karib yang kerap menjadi roadies mereka kala L.A.P.D masih berjaya, untuk dijadikan tandem Munky di sektor gitar. Bersamaan dengan masuknya Brian, mereka pun sepakat buat mengubah warna musik yang diusung. Dari funk alternatif menjadi metal yang lebih agresif. Lewat satu pertemuan yang tak direncanakan sebelumnya, kuartet ini akhirnya menemukan orang yang tepat untuk mengisi posisi vokalis. Jonathan Davis namanya. Juga kelahiran Bakersfield, cowok yang saat itu sudah mempunyai pekerjaan tetap sebagai asisten bedah mayat di rumah mayat Kern County itu ditemukan saat sedang tampil di panggung bersama bandnya, SexArt. Ngetop karena kelam Adalah pertemuan ini juga yang akhirnya membuat musik mereka jadi terasa unik. Bagaimana tidak? Groove-groove bernuansa funky, yang selama ini lebih terasa pas mengiringi musik bernuansa ceria, dipadu dengan besetan gitar distortif yang sengaja dibuat bersteman rendah membalut lirik-lirik yang sama sekali tidak ceria, namun justru sebaliknya, sangat gelap dan mencekam. Saat itu, kecuali Creep (nama mereka sebelum akhirnya diubah menjadi KoRn), tak ada satu band pun yang maju dengan kombinasi sedemikian kontras. Begitulah. Tiga tahun setelah pertemuan itu, album debut KoRn pun dirilis. Bermodal singel sangar macam Blind dan Daddy, kemunculan mereka seakan membuka keran bagi gelombang metal jenis baru: NuMetal/hip-metal! Ya. Enggak lama kemudian, langkah dan formulasi yang diracik oleh para personel KoRn langsung ditiru oleh bermacam band. Pemakaian gitar tujuh senar seakan satu keharusan bagi para gitaris metal. Lirik-lirik straight forward yang isinya melulu tentang kepedihan, kemarahan, raungan, serta kemurungan menjadi satu keharusan bagi para vokalis. Dan, tiap-tiap basis atau drumer yang ingin kiprahnya dilihat harus mampu membentuk groove-groove layaknya para musisi hip hop, R&B, atau funky! Jago mengorganisir konser Ternyata mereka juga jago mengorganisir konser. Belakangan, hasil kerja mereka menjadi salah satu contoh konser sukses karena kemasannya yang unik. Diberi nama Family Values Tour (FVT), tur tahunan itu mulai digelar pada tahun 1998. Sampai sekarang, FVT masih tetap berlangsung dan masuk dalam daftar tunggu metalheads di Amerika setiap tahunnya. Keistimewaan tur ini enggak lain lantaran kekuatan para pengisi acaranya. Biarpun tidak terlalu beragam, namun line up yang disusun Jonathan cs mampu mewakili dua kubu yang tadinya dianggap saling berseberangan: metal dan hip hop. Untuk putaran pertama tahun 1998, selain mereka sendiri, Jonathan cs menggamit Ice Cube, Limp Bizkit, Orgy, dan Rammstein. Selain faktor pengisi acara, sikap simpatik yang ditunjukkan oleh KoRn sebagai penyelenggara yang membuat ajang ini menyedot begitu banyak penonton dan menjadi satu rangkaian tur yang paling ditunggu. Bayangkan saja. Untuk sajian berdurasi sekitar 6-7 jam lengkap dengan pengisi acara nan paten plus atraksi laser dan panggung yang megah, penonton hanya dikenai tiket seharga 30 dollar AS. Sebagai perbandingan, harga tiket untuk konser sejenis saat itu yang termurah berkisar antara 75-85 dollar AS! Sudah barang tentu hal itu makin melambungkan nama KoRn di mata para penggemar metal. Keberpihakan mereka terhadap fans dianggap sangat jelas. Begitu pun posisi mereka yang dianggap “terhormat” di antara band-band sealiran lainnya. Saat album ketiga, Follow The Leader (1998), dirilis, KoRn praktis sudah menjadi semacam Godfather of NuMetal! Yap. Disadari atau tidak, dalam perjalanannya, KoRn tergiring masuk ke dalam golongan band-of-the-band. Band yang tak butuh lagi number one hit di berbagai negara untuk dapat diakui. Band yang tak terlalu peduli bahwa albumnya tak lagi mencetak angka penjualan jutaan kopi, melainkan band yang kerap menjadi inspirasi band lainnya untuk berbuat sama. Band yang ada untuk fans dan selalu berorientasi pada kepuasan fans! Mengerjakan album sendiri Berbekal prinsip-prinsip dasar band-of-the-band (serta sedikit banyak pengalaman buruk Untouchables) itulah, hampir sepanjang tahun 2003 dihabiskan oleh Jonathan cs di dalam studio, meracik formulasi buat Take A Look In The Mirror. Tak lagi dibantu oleh produser di luar band–seperti yang biasa mereka lakukan di lima album sebelumnya–kali ini seluruh proses produksi mereka kerjakan sendiri. Mulai dari perumusan konsep, membentuk komposisi dasar, hingga aransemen utuh. Adalah Jonathan yang kemudian didaulat untuk memegang kendali seluruh proses produksi. “Ah, saya enggak pernah merasa sebagai leader of the band. Dari dulu KoRn adalah milik kami bersama. Dan karenanya masing-masing berhak menjadi bos. Posisi saya selama pembuatan Take A Look…, bisa dibilang hanya sebagai cheerleader. Yang menyemangati dan mendorong teman-teman untuk melakukan yang terbaik!” bantah Jonathan. Apa pun yang dikatakan oleh Jonathan, yang jelas, pola kerja seperti itu terbukti ampuh.
